the twentienth of april, a thursday

So, I purposely didn't turn the TV on once today because I didn't want to watch all the one-year Columbine stuff.

It's not because I don't care, and it's not because I think the media exploits it. I think it's important to remember what happened, but I watched a fifteen-minute interview with four of the teachers last night, and I cried and cried. Who needs that?

The strangest thing happened when I was going to bed last night. It was around 1:30, and I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth, and I heard some people hollering outside. So I peeked out the window in my bathroom, and I see two guys trying to get into the car.

MY car.

I'm standing there, mouth full of toothpaste, wondering what to do about it. The police? Should I yell out the window? It didn't really look like they were trying to break in; I mean, they didn't look very stealthy, and they didn't have crowbars or tire irons or anything.

So I spit, grab the phone just in case, and go downstairs. I step down onto the sidewalk and call across the street: "Um, that's my car." The guy trying to get into the driver's side laughed, saying, "I was wondering why the key wasn't working."

Looking back, I'm not sure how the phone would have helped me. I mean, if they were actually trying to steal the car and I caught them, they wouldn't come after me, they'd just run away. And if they did come after me, what was I going to do with the phone? Beat them over the head with it? But hey, it was late, I wasn't thinking.

Turns out they were either wasted or really, really confused, because their actual car was two cars up the street.

And I can't sass them too much, because I have to admit that I've done that on more than one occasion, perfectly sober, in the middle of the day.

I really was just about to go to bed, except that I saw that "Triangle," which may be one of my favorite X-Files ever and the first time Mulder and Scully ever got smoochy is going to be on F/X in like twenty minutes.

I mean, it's not like I have it on tape or anything, or that I haven't seen it a few (cough) times already, but still.

However, I am extraordinarily tired. It's been a long day.
