So, this being my last entry before I leave for the weekend, and Sunday being the Oscars, what else could I possibly do with this entry? Picture: American Beauty, no doubt about it. Buzz is that it's between this and Cider House Rules, but who had heard of CHR before it was nominated? The Insider was too serious, the Green Mile too long, The Sixth Sense too commercially successful. Director: Sam Mendes, for American Beauty. Last year was an anomoly, where Spielberg won for Saving Private Ryan but Shakespeare in Love won best picture. Usually, they match. Actor: Kevin Spacey. At first I thought Denzel Washington would get it, after winning the Golden Globe, and because a black actor hasn't won in forever. But I think it belongs to Kevin Spacey, besides which, I want him to move in with me. Actress: Hilary Swank. She's won every other blessed award, and even though she's a relative newcomer, everyone is raving about her performance, so I'll go with her too. Supporting Actor: Haley Joel Osment. You gotta go with the kid. Duncan and Law are too new, Cruise will find a Best Actor role someday, and Caine's got his already. And Oscar loves those young'uns. Supporting Actress: This one's hard for me. The only performance I saw was Toni Collette's, so I'll go with her. Angelina Jolie is a Golden Globe darling, but she's too sassy for the Academy. Original Screenplay: I very much want to give this to M. Night Shyamalan, but I'm going to go with American Beauty's Alan Ball. The Sixth Sense was wonderful, but we have to admit it dragged a little. American Beauty was as close to flawless as you can get. Adapted Screenplay: Anthony Minghella for The Talented Mr. Ripley, although I don't actually think he's going to win. I just loved this movie so much, I wanted to see it get something. Foreign: All About My Mother. According to Entertainment Weekly, it's the only lock. Pedro Almodovar hasn't won yet. Okay, the rest are guesses. Art Direction: The Talented Mr. Ripley Cinematography: American Beauty Costume: Topsy-Turvy Editing: The Sixth Sense Make-up: Austin Powers Score: The Talented Mr. Ripley, Gabriel Yared Original Song: You'll Be in My Heart, Phil Collins Sound: Star Wars Episode I Sound Effects Editing: The Matrix Visual Effects: The Matrix Documentary Feature: Buena Vista Social Club Documentary Short Subject: The Wildest Show in the South Animated Short: When the Day Breaks Live Short: Killing Joe Remember, you too can enter, but you have to do it by show time on Sunday. And since I won't be here, the clock in my e-mail program will control. And if it screws it up, too bad for you for waiting so long. I won't be back until Monday afternoon, so I won't be able to announce the winners until that evening. Good luck, and remember, no dance numbers this year! |
