the tenth of may, a wednesday

I am so grateful for my lawyer friend Laura in California. I don't know what I'd do without her. She called because she got my character and fitness questionnaire and wanted to make sure her answers matched up with mine about how long we've known each other, even though I didn't have to put that in my application. She also read me the other questions, which were basically about whether I had ever been arrested, addicted to anything, mentally insane, or financially insane, to which she answered no to all, even though she probably could have answered yes to that last one, but she didn't, 'cause it's not really true. They basically want to know if I've ever been hauled into court for failure to pay my debts, and that certainly hasn't happened, althouth I did just recently get a notice to appear for not paying a parking ticket.

I took care of that.

Anyway, we spent the rest of our conversation discussing the bar exam and how to prepare for it, and she made me feel alternately confident and scared out of my mind. The idea is to do everything the bar course people tell you to do, and they tell you everything. It isn't like you just go to the class and then the rest of the day, you're on your own. They give you a homework schedule, remind you when to review certain topics, tell you what to do over the weekend, all that kind of thing. Laura told me that my main problem will be keeping myself organized, and I know that's true, but she said that if I stick to the bar class schedule, I'll be fine.

God, I hope so.

Speaking of law school, Sam's little call-girlfriend graduated from law school on The West Wing, and he bought her a briefcase. I was kind of happy to see that, and to see her say that a briefcase is the standard law school graduation present, because I know my parents watch that show and I want them to get the hint.

Maybe not for themselves, since my actual graduation gift is our trip to Las Vegas in August, but if they wanted to pass the word on to any various and sundry relatives, that'd be cool.

Ugh. How materialistic can I be?

But frankly, I deserve it. Not cash and gifts, but acknowledgement that I've accomplished something.

So, if you bought yourself a little USA Today today, or you happened to visit this article on USA Today online, you will see a lovely half-page story about the governor of this state, who is on the short list to become George Dubyuh's running mate.

And if you read the little bio section, you'll discover the name of the law school he attended. Hmmmm... wonder why I would point that out to you.

He's going to be the keynote speaker at my graduation, which is cool. And if he does become the V.P. nominee, it will likely bring at least a little bit of recognition to my school, which could help me in my job search.

But the other cool thing is that my friend Susannah's husband works in the governor's press office, which means there is a certain potential that they could be relocating in January. Very cool indeed.

I have to say, that OnStar thing you can get in your car kind of freaks me out. I don't know why. I just find it unsettling that you can push a button and have someone unlock your doors for you, give you directions, tell you where the nearest gas station is, or send for an ambulance when it notices your air bag has been deployed.

All very helpful things, no doubt, but it's a little "1984"ish for me.

Did we all see that freak guy on Millionaire on Tuesday night? The Rodney Dangerfield impressionist? He was way scary. I decided that his actor "friend" in the audience was actually his kept boy.

I've noticed that Regis has been hesitant to use the word "intact" when discussing the lifelines ever since everyone teased him about it during Celebrity Millionaire.

And I knew the $500,000 question tonight, I did. I have to get on that show.

Okay, enough with the Millionaire. I'll go now.
