the seventh of may, a sunday

Well, out of the last 24 hours, I've been asleep for 14 of them.

And damn, it felt good.

Yesterday morning was my Trusts & Estates exam. It was scheduled for noon, but I had to take it early because I had a bridal shower luncheon for my cousin to go to.

And I made a mistake on Thursday, I think. That night, my back was bothering me, so I took one of the pills I have on hand that I got from the doctor the last time my back went out. I take them sort of as a preventative measure now, just whenever it feels like there's something squirrely going on.

Well, they knock me out, but I had to get up early on Friday, so I only slept for about six hours. I just felt muffled all day. I tried to study but the words kept blurring and nothing was processing anyway. So I went into the library and did some mindless work for my library boss, pasting labels on computer disks for kids who type their exams. I came home that evening, ate a frozen dinner because I hadn't had anything to eat all day and wanted at least some kind of well-rounded meal, but I was still kind of out of it. So instead of staying up all night and then sleeping for a couple of hours right before the test, I went to bed at 11 and got up at 3:30.

The exam was supposed to be easy. Ha. I went over to school at 8:15 and found the professor, who had everything all set up for me in a neighboring professor's office. I got myself set up with all my notes out (it was open-book), started the exam, and realized that I had left a crucial set of notes at home, ones I was looking at while I was drying my hair.

Thank god I live across the street, because I went home, in the middle of my exam. There'd have been no way I could have done the exam without them, but I sure could have used the four minutes it took for me to retrieve them, because even though no one was in the office with me, I'm sort of a puritan about cheating and I ended when I was supposed to end, not one minute later. That exam was impossible, and I heard today from people who took it at the normal time that they thought it was impossible too, but I also heard that this professor is nice and starts you out at a 70, and you earn points from there, and it's impossible to get below that unless it's just really obvious that you were barely in the class. All I need to pass is a 65, and that is all I care about getting.

After it was over, I came home, got dressed, and drove to the shower, feeling good (not so much about the exam, but just generally happy that it was over). However, it was very apparent that I was half out of my head, because about a half-mile before I got on the turnpike, I realized that I had forgotten the card, this beautiful card that my mother gave me to write for my shower gift that she had wrapped for me. So I went back to get it, and while I was home I decided to grab a diet Coke for the road. I was at the bottom of the stairs in front of the door when I realized that I still had forgotten the card. I put my drink down on the table in our foyer and went up for the card, then came back down and got in the car before I realized I left my drink on the table.

The shower was lovely, but on the way home shortly after 4:00, I was crashing very hard. Finally, my exit, my apartment, my bed, and my cat, who almost never joins me for naps, sprawled out next to my pillow, rested her paws on my elbow, and snoozed right along with me.

She didn't stay there until 11:00, however, which is when I first woke up. I lay there for a moment debating about whether or not I wanted to get up and be awake for a while, but the decision was made for me when I fell back asleep and didn't wake up again until 8:00 this morning.

I feel much better, thank you very much. Must be a law school exam period thing, because I just read that Melissa had her own sleep-fest this weekend. Sleep is good. I have already counted on sleeping all day the Thursday after the bar, and then going out Friday and getting really, really drunk.

I called last week and got my new phone number in KC, which is very exciting, because now I can send out my change-of-address cards. When I called to order the basic service, they offered unlimited internet access for 12.95 a month, plus if I stay with them six months, I'll get a free digital camera. Such a sucker, but I said yes. The first two months are free, anyway, so I'll only have to pay for four to get the camera.

I know. I'm still a sucker. I couldn't live with just the basic service, either, I had to get the whole caboodle of caller ID, call waiting & call waiting ID (which is cool), and voice-mail to catch the calls I get when I'm online. That Pagoo thing was fine, but there was like a five-minute delay between the time the person left a message and the time it popped up on my screen, so if I logged off in those five minutes, I wouldn't get the message until the next time I went online, and that happened more often than you might think.

I have to make all my decisions today about what I'm taking with me to Kansas and what I'm leaving. My father arranged for three moving companies to come and give me quotes starting tomorrow, so I have to decide what to get rid of, because the apartment I'm moving to is about 200 square feet smaller than what I have now.

I was thinking maybe of having a yard sale. I was reading about Jen's yard sale last week, and I thought it might be a good idea. I'm going to see if the women in the apartments above and below me want to do it too. And now that I think about it, I'm sure a lot of my friends who are getting ready to move will have stuff they'd want to sell as well.

The main problem is that the twice-a-year city trash hauling day has been put off until June, which is after I'll be gone. They used to be in May, the day where you can put out anything that doesn't fit in the trash bags you buy from the city and they'll cart it away for you, and I was counting on that day rather heavily. Now I'll either have to pay a hauling company to come and take it, rent a truck and do it myself, or, the most appealing option, have a yard sale and hope to make enough money to pay the hauling company to take away whatever is left.

But speaking of the mover guy, I still have a lot of work to do in preparation for his arrival (at 9:00 tomorrow morning... thanks, Dad). So I'm off. Go do something nice for yourself today.

It takes almost twice as long to find something in your coat pockets when you aren't wearing the coat. If you have a flight jacket or parka with more than four pockets and you need to find something in one of them, you'll save time by putting the coat on first.
